WHAT IS JABBERPUNK?
JABBERPUNK is a queer owned punk zine aimed at the overall punk community. In essence, the purpose is to discuss certain issues within the local punk community of South Florida, showcase local bands and visual artists, discuss punk history, and overall be a good time
The zine is entirely run by Eddie Diverse (any pronouns), a genderqueer artist and musician, who emigrated to the U.S. during the height of the housing crisis, much to her dismay.
This blog is mostly to expand upon articles within the zine itself, from interviews to analysis, as unfortunately the zine format doesn’t allow for a lot of deeper nuances due to its pretty small formatting. That being said, this is entirely supplemental reading and the majority of what’s presented here is already within the zine itself. If you’re finding out about the zine through this blog, I highly implore you to check out the zine itself as well! I put a lot of work into it, you can find current issues here on my main site, or if you’re at a local show, you might have it handed to you or snuck into your bag.
As for why this zine is being made, I’ve been deep into the punk community in South Florida for a pretty good amount of time. Being a queer person in these spaces has always felt safe for me, it’s a community where I’ve (in a pretty literal sense) been able to let myself go. There’s obviously a few issues within the subculture, from conservative rats wriggling their way in to the way masculinity has been centered. But nonetheless, this is a subculture I absolutely adore.
The history of it, the music, the fight against an oppressive government (,and, admittedly, the freedom to elbow someone and get elbowed back) have captivated me in ways nothing else really have. It’s a beautiful and diverse community, and I want to capture that the only way I really know how to.
Even if its through the lamest way I can think of, it’s something I’m passionate about, something that, to me at least, captures almost everything I love about being a punk in the palm of my hand.
And I hope this zine can do just that while being a good time for you, the reader.
